- Engelberger's
- robots have
- revolutionized
- production in
- industry. Many
- repetitive, dull
- and dangerous
- jobs have in
- effect been
- abolished. And
- the robot revo-
- lution is still
- in its early stages
- #
- Unlike human
- workers, robots
- in manufacturing
- don't get tired or
- bored, nor do
- they make
- mistakes. Their
- mechanical
- infallibility has
- become a selling-
- point. This advert-
- isement for Fiat
- cars boasted:
- "Built by robots,
- driven by humans"
- #
- Technological
- advance has
- always been
- greeted with
- ambivalence, and
- this is reflected
- in the treatment
- of the robots in
- fiction and film.
- A robot can be
- your best friend
- (like R2-D2 in Star
- Wars) or your
- worst nightmare
- (as in Terminator)
- #
- Robots have
- proved to be
- invaluable in
- dangerous jobs
- such as bomb
- disposal, deep-
- sea diving, space
- exploration and
- handling nuclear
- material. These
- robots can be
- operated by radio
- control or tele-
- assistance
- #
- To lessen the
- damage done to
- the environment
- by pesticides,
- robots are used in
- "precision farming",
- a technique whereby
- they locate weeds
- in crop fields and
- spray them
- individually. They
- can also be taught
- the delicate art of
- flower-arranging
- #
- Research
- continues into
- robotic surgery.
- Since 1994 the
- Massachusetts
- Institute of
- Technology has
- been developing
- tiny micro robots,
- designed to be
- capable of
- crawling into the
- human ear and
- carrying out
- operations
